Can you recover Google Photos
Locked Folder photos?
If your Locked Folder photos weren't backed up, they are almost certainly gone. Locked Folder stores items in encrypted, device-only storage. Deletions skip the Trash and are permanent. Recovery software cannot read this storage. Recovery is realistically possible in exactly one case: cloud backup was turned on before the loss. Here's how to know which case you're in — in under a minute.

The one question that decides everything
Was Locked Folder backup turned ON before your photos disappeared?
✅ Case 1 — Backup was ON: your photos are recoverable
Do this: on a computer, sign in at photos.google.com → open Collections → Locked Folder → re-authenticate when prompted. Your backed-up Locked Folder items appear — on any device signed into your account.
If they're visible there, you're safe. Turn backup back on for any new device — and consider keeping a second copy outside the Locked Folder (see the five rules below).
🟡 Case 2 — Backup was OFF, but your device still works and nothing was uninstalled or reset
Your photos may not be deleted — just not showing. In order: 1) check the Google Photos Trash (items moved out of Locked Folder sometimes land there) · 2) check your file manager → DCIM and Pictures (items moved out return to their original folder; reindexing can take time) · 3) restart the device, reopen Photos → Locked Folder · 4) clear the Photos app cache — never "clear data": on this app, clearing data permanently deletes your un-backed-up Locked Folder items.

❌ Case 3 — Backup was OFF, and one of these happened
You uninstalled the Google Photos app · you cleared the Photos app data · you factory reset the device · the device was lost, stolen or damaged · you deleted the items inside Locked Folder.
They are not recoverable. This is by design: Google's documentation states that un-backed-up Locked Folder items exist only on that device, that deletions bypass the Trash, and that uninstalling, clearing data or resetting removes them. There is no hidden copy.
Why recovery software can't help — and why we'd tell you if it could
You will find pages selling "Locked Folder recovery" tools for exactly this situation. The honest technical picture, with our claims labeled:
Sourced fact: Google's documentation states that un-backed-up items are deleted on uninstall, clear-data or factory reset, and that Locked Folder deletions don't pass through the Trash.
Reasoned inference (we label it as such): Locked Folder items live in the app's private, encrypted storage — not in your camera roll, not on your SD card. A file-scanning tool cannot reach or decrypt app-private storage on a non-rooted device, and a tool scanning an SD card for photos that were never stored there cannot find them.
Our advice, with nothing to sell you in this moment: do not pay for recovery software for Case 3. It cannot do what its marketing implies here. Spend that money on prevention instead — or on nothing at all.
Never again: the five rules
1 · Never keep the only copy in any hidden or locked location
Hidden storage is for privacy, not durability. Keep a second copy — encrypted, exportable, anywhere you control.
2 · If you use Locked Folder, turn its cloud backup ON
Accepting that your private photos then live on Google's servers. That's the trade Locked Folder offers — make it consciously.
3 · Before any device change, update, uninstall or reset: move items OUT first
Un-backed-up Locked Folder items do not transfer — not by USB cable, not by cloud transfer.
4 · Clear cache, never data

5 · Prefer tools that can prove your photos survive them
